Inflight Portal QR Code Access

My Digital Experience team implemented QR code access for the inflight entertainment portal, eliminating the friction of manual URL entry and enabling instant connection from passengers’ personal devices.

The Problem

Accessing the inflight entertainment portal required passengers to:

  1. Connect to the onboard WiFi network
  2. Open a web browser
  3. Manually type the portal URL (southwestwifi.com or similar)
  4. Navigate to desired content

This multi-step process created friction, especially for:

  • Less tech-savvy passengers - URL entry can be confusing
  • Passengers with long URLs - Easy to make typos
  • First-time users - Unsure of the correct address
  • Quick connections - Too much effort for short flights

The Solution

We added QR codes to seatback literature that link directly to the inflight portal:

Implementation

  • Seatback cards - QR codes on safety cards and entertainment guides
  • Tray tables - Printed QR codes where passengers naturally look
  • Overhead bins - Additional placement for boarding visibility
  • Marketing materials - Consistent QR access across touchpoints

Seamless Experience

  1. Passenger connects to WiFi (often automatic)
  2. Scans QR code with phone camera
  3. Portal opens immediately in browser
  4. Ready to browse content

Technical Details

  • Dynamic QR codes that can be updated for special campaigns
  • Analytics tracking for QR scan attribution
  • Fallback URLs if QR scanning fails
  • Compatible with all modern smartphone cameras
